Cat food is produced for the specific nutritional needs of cats. Although cats are natural carnivores, most manufactured cat food contains both animal and vegetable content, many have vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. A necessary nutrient is the amino acid derivative taurine, as cats cannot naturally produce the compound. Cats fed on dog food, which has no taurine, may develop retinal problems and go blind.
